chasing the sun

moonah, tas - CONSTRUCTION COMMENCING EARLY 2026

This project is a good example of how small shifts can deliver substantial gains. Our clients wanted to replace the existing rear volume, which was in poor repair, with a new space to house the combined living areas and kitchen. Three key design moves shaped the outcome.

First, the new volume was shifted westward rather than aligning with the side setbacks of the original home as conceived by a previous designer. This created a secondary service access and brought northern sun into the kitchen, an important improvement given the south facing garden and the Tassie climate.

Second, we introduced a link structure with a reduced ceiling height to connect the old and new. This zone houses the pantry, fridge and laundry, allowing the kitchen itself to remain open and free of overhead cupboards, where art can be hung and views to the mountain can be enjoyed.

Third, the roof over the dining room was ‘popped up’ with a steeper roof form to allow for high-level windows. This brings sunlight into the centre of the new addition, creates a greater sense of height and spaciousness, and enables cross ventilation. The dining area was also planned to comfortably accommodate the large round table our clients wanted.

The new volume was designed with efficient dimensions to reduce material waste and construction costs.
